How to Choose the Right Dog Vest Size: A Chest Measurement Guide

Choosing the right dog vest size starts with one simple measurement: your dog's chest. A comfortable fit should allow your dog to walk, sit and move freely without the vest rubbing or riding up.

Why chest measurement matters

Dogs come in different shapes, even when they weigh the same. Chest measurement is usually more useful than weight alone because it shows how much room your dog needs around the ribcage.

How to measure your dog's chest

  1. Use a soft measuring tape, or use a piece of string and measure it with a ruler afterwards.
  2. Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, usually just behind the front legs.
  3. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug. It should touch the fur without squeezing the body.
  4. Write down the measurement in centimetres.

Measurements are taken with the garment laid flat. If your dog's measurement falls between sizes, choose the larger size when your dog needs more room around the chest.

How should a dog vest fit?

  • You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the vest and your dog's chest.
  • The vest should stay in place when your dog walks, but it should not restrict the shoulders or front legs.
  • Check that the fastenings sit flat and do not press into the skin.
  • For long-bodied dogs, compare back length as well as chest measurement.
